The birth of new ideas

Here is an example of how great things can start with an idea that often have a  long incubation period.
Before the internet was born Murray Leinster wrote a science fiction short story,  that was first published in the March 1946.   This story was the forerunner of the modern internet experience.

The History of Wikipedia
Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger formally launched Wikipedia on 15 January 2001, but its technological and conceptual underpinnings predate this. Rick Gates made the earliest known proposal for an online encyclopaedia in 1993, but Richard Stallman proposed the concept of a free-as-in-freedom online encyclopaedia (as distinct from mere open source or freemium) in December 2000.

The internet Society

The Internet Society is a global cause-driven organization governed by a diverse Board of Trustees that is dedicated to ensuring that the Internet stays open, transparent and defined by you.

We are the world's trusted independent source of leadership for Internet policy, technology standards, and future development. More than simply advancing technology, we work to ensure the Internet continues to grow and evolve as a platform for innovation, economic development, and social progress for people around the world.

The history of the internet

The history of the Internet began with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. The first message was sent over the ARPANet, which evolved into the internet, from computer science Professor Leonard Kleinrock's laboratory at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), after the second piece of network equipment was installed at Stanford Research Institute (SRI). Packet switched networks such as ARPANET, Mark I at NPL in the UK, CYCLADES, Merit Network, Tymnet, and Telenet, were developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s using a variety of protocols. The ARPANET in particular led to the development of protocols for internetworking, in which multiple separate networks could be joined together into a network of networks.

History of the Web

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989, about 20 years after the first connection was established over what is today known as the Internet. At the time, Tim was a software engineer at CERN, the large particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. Many scientists participated in experiments at CERN for extended periods, then returned to their laboratories around the world. These scientists were eager to exchange data and results, but had difficulties doing so. Tim understood this need, and understood the unrealized potential of millions of computers connected together through the Internet.

What will the future hold of the Internet?

Lets hope that George Oswell's 1984 will not become the reality in 2084

May generosity of humanity and the need for the internet to develop the free information-sharing platform  will outstrip tendencies of greed, manipulation and control.

A better world, faster.
